[Bug-Win] Lazy Giant Boars, and confused troops

Post by simpkin_11 » Sun Nov 26, 2017 6:40 am

The Giant Boar army spun around 180 degrees, and sat down in a grassy field.

My forces of Faerie Archers, Gnoll Deathbringers and Orc Axemen were confused by this tactical maneuver, and decided to wait and see what happens.

And thus they wait.. tell this very day....

Interesting. I fixed a number of issues with the combat AI in the latest update, especially related to spinning in place or marching past enemies. There is also a timer which will terminate battles if no attacks have been made within the last 2 minutes (modified by the battle speed slider). So if it drags on beyond that, it would mean there was an unreported crash.

There's a general problem with errors being handled silently and the game trying to continue. I think that's what we're seeing here. I am changing the exception handling to trigger a dialog with relevant information. That should make it easier to get to the core of what is the exact issue when something like this happens.

Thanks for taking the time to make a screenshot and detailed description of the situation. It is much appreciated.

Thanks for knocking these out so fast, for the most part, I have not tried for a long game yet.

I start a new game, play 50-100 turns.. put in bug reports... start a new game.

After the next patch, If I see this happen again, I will try to gather a little more information.

Re-created this issue with a defense of my tower early on against pirates.

My Faerie Warriors decided t spin 180 and moon the attacking Human Marauders

The Marauders having been at sea for so long, decided to sit in the field and watch the show...

I moved the slider to Fastest and waiting 10 minutes.
Nothing changed...

Pause/un-pause seems to do nothing

Additional testing for attack and defense, it seems to be the blue side that does the 180 turn.

Added an additional unit to my army and attacked.. same result.

Added a general to the army and attacked.. same result.

Removed the Faerie unit.. same result.

Non visual battle works as expected with units charging.

Additional testing shows it seems to be every battle I fight now

Things of note: cannot bring up the game menu by hitting escape for approx 10-15 seconds after the unit turns a 180.

after that I can hit escape and close the game out.

I fixed a bug recently where the "model" and "simulation" were out of sync. This looks almost exactly like the issue, so I must have missed a case where it can go wrong.

If you are curious, the units have a basic physical simulation with mass, velocity, collision, etc. The simulation is initialized with values for position, facing, etc. according to where the units start out, and then when the simulation runs the values are fed back into the model and used by the AI to make decisions on what to do.

I think this is the same issue repeating, the AI thinks the unit is facing one way and the simulation has it facing another way. It then starts turning around, and when the actual facing is fed back into the AI, it gets super confused and the decision making breaks. I'll do more testing and see what has brought the issue back.

Found the issue: It was a bug triggered by not having valid battle spells. I've fixed the issue for the coming update. Thanks a lot for the reports, they were very helpful in locating the problem.
